Glass Houses

People who live in glass houses should.

When I was very young my father would always tell me that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.  I’ve never known anyone who lives in a glass house, so the old adage always seemed strange to me.  I didn’t care much for stone throwing anyway, and as I grew up I started thinking maybe the idiom should be updated to “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t walk around naked.”

I’m not here to tell you I’ve finally met someone who lives in a glass house and they walk around in their birthday suit, but I am here to say there is a hotel in Canada the comes very  close to that: Hotel De Glace – Canada’s Ice hotel.

Hôtel de Glace

Hôtel de Glace

The hotel is the only ice hotel in North America.  It is built every year in December near Quebec City – in about a 5 KM radius from the city. The hotel Opens every year in early January and stays open until April.

I know you’re wondering about it and yes, the beds are made of ice! But don’t worry; they also have comfortable mattress and blankets. 30,000 tons of snow and 500 tons of ice are used in the construction of the 4-feet-thick walls, all made by the hotel in a special mixture.

The hotel has amenities such as a wedding chapel and a bar, a grand hall and a grand ice slide. The bar serves drink in ice glasses and the furniture is made of ice.

But honestly folks, it’s just a glorified igloo. It’s a very cool place to stay, has had over 1 million people visiting, and it’s located in the incredible vicinity of Quebec city, but not much more can be said about it. It’s a unique experience for any visitor. Worth the trip.
